Captain America #1

Cover image of Captain America volume 3 issue #1

Writer: Mark Waid
Penciler: Ron Garney

Steve is in Japan, where a supervillain is attacking American cultural imperialism. Why, Marvel? Why?.

Also, Lady Deathstrike carves a bowling ball into a flower with her claws, and Sharon is awesome.

I feel like this entire issue can just be summed up with:

Agree! Even if we're all here like.. why Japan...I just really like Mark Waid + Cap/cap support cast. He does a great job.

A movie celebrating Captain America's victory in WWII ("the ultimate solder in a war for patriotism and principle") is premiering in Japan? Am I the only one who cringed at how insensitive this appeared?

ETA: My favorite bit in this issue is Sharon ranting about Cap's reappearance to the guy she's beating up. I liked it as a character bit, but I also liked the effect the letterer got by squeezing a lot of "I don't know" into a too-small word balloon.

Ay, the premise of this issue gives me the creeps.

I find it really interesting that they emphasize Steve was a hero, but he's on the way to an idol now. It's interesting how Captain America's image has changed throughout time, both in and out of the comicsverse.

So...problematic issue is problematic. Putting that aside I did like how Steve cannot help but get involved when he thinks lives are at risk. It was in character, if not necessarily the best decision he could have made in these circumstances. I'm in agreement with everyone else that Sharon is tops. Her reaction to Cap's return certainly didn't sound like someone suffering from true love, which makes me interested in how her relationship with Steve plays out in this run.
